Like. The way Cap holds on briefly to Havers’ finger, just for one last second of contact that’s so subtle that nobody would scrutinise Havers for it, but it’s needed desperately to convey so many unspoken things in the short time the Captain has left. But then Havers decides to take a risk - to break free of that subtlety by reaching for the Captain’s hand and resting his fingertips on top of it. To reciprocate those unspoken things loudly, for everyone to see. To thank him for every moment they shared together. To reassure his James that everything would be okay.

AND THEN THIS!! Identical to how he held it before he died, squeezing his eyes shut and attempting to remember that fleeting moment of contact. It’s not much, but it’s all he has.

Every time he’s scared, or lonely, or just in need of reassurance that he’s doing the right thing, in a way his Anthony is always there. Permanently by his side, just as the Captain had always wanted.

GOD. They just break my heart.

OK, but can we all just have a moment for The Captain and Havers using each other's names, because that was an absolute stroke of genius in the writing of this scene.

They can't say how they feel. They can't have an open confession. They are being watched by a room full of army officers, they are risking so much by even holding hands while The Captain dies.

Havers stops The Captain short when he's trying to confess. The little "I know". They can't say how they feel, but they both know what they want to say.

But then this happens

Using each other's names.

Not their rank. Not sir. Not even surnames.

Their names.

It's so subtle but it is so incredibly powerful. It's personal. It's intimate. It's a confession without words.

I will never get over it.

I wish they got to be as happy as they deserved to be :( but I guess that's why I live in a near-constant state of delusion and denial and eat up every fic on ao3 the moment they get posted or updated.

Also I drew this on ibis paint and oh my GOD why do all the blending tools SUCK I thought photoshop was mid for drawing but ibis paint almost made me explode and go ballistic the shading is absolutely foul on this forgive me but my respect for ibis painters is forever high

My dear friend recommended me to watch BBC Ghosts and now I’m OBSESSED with these series. I’ve never drawn fanart of any series before but now I’ll definitely will.
